In this paper we describe two case studies in which we tested a tactile torso display in a waypoint navigation task. The display consisted of eight vibrating elements in a belt around the operator. The case studies were both conducted in a vibrating working environment: a Gazelle helicopter and a high speed rigid inflatable boat. Both environments result in whole body vibrations that can disturb the perception of the vibratory signals on the display. The vibrotactile display indicated the direction to the next waypoint by a localised vibration in the horizontal plane around the operator, and the passage through the waypoint by a 1-second tap by all vibrating elements simultaneously. Both case studies show that the display is intuitive: without training, both operators directly reach high performance levels. Furthermore, the operators had no trouble in perceiving the tactile display despite the whole body vibrations. This indicates that this innovative display is ready to be implemented in real world settings.
