Parnell, Newmarket, Eden Terrace, Newton and Ponsonby-Richmond, extend in a broken crescent to tbe south of the central core—little foci of activity amid the rather dull residences. Relieving the monotony of the dull rows of houses and buildings, however, are avenues of plane-trees and enclaves of bush in Grafton and Parnell gullies, whilst the greens of Western and Albert Parks and the Domain do much to lighten the drabness of the landscape (Fig. 2).
