Pain is one of the most compelling and physiologically complex experiences of humans. It is usually a very unpleasant sensation that defies consistent satisfactory definition. What is commonly labeled as pain by humans covers a wide range of subjective phenomena, usually resulting from the perception of a noxious stimulus. Debate continues as to whether animals commonly used in teaching and research perceive pain as humans do (68).
