METHODSAdult fishes of both sexes were employed in these studies. The animals were obtained from the North Atlantic waters (temperatures ranging from 14 to 18 C) of Frenchman’s Bay, Maine. The fish were caught in open water and were impaled on baited hooks for a period not in excess of 6 hr. When they were removed from the hooks, they were maintained in sea water and transferred to a live car in the collecting vessel until they could be transferred to a stationary live car which was bathed continuously by fresh sea water The animals generally were used for study within l-3 days of trapping.
