Heart rate of the fossorial mole rat at rest was compared with that of the white laboratory rat at normoxic, hypercapnic and hypoxic conditions in thermoneutrality and cold. Heart rate of the mole rat in thermoneutrality and normoxia was 142 .+-. SD/15 min. It was < 0.5 the heart rate of the white rat and .apprx. 0.4 the expected value for a normal mammal of its size. The heart rate was arrhythmic. Heart rate of the mole rate was insensitive to hypercapnica up to PCO2 = 36 torr. The mole rat was able to increase its heart rate in thermoneutrality and hypoxia down to PO2 of 32 torr. It was capable of maintaining a stable heart rate in cold and hypoxia (10.degree. C; 41 torr). The white rat could not. The mole rat was prominent compared with other rodents in its ability to maintain and increase heart rate in hypoxia.
