Research in ferroelectricity has expanded to new and more complex systems and new experimental techniques are being applied. A brief review is given of recent information obtained. In particular, it is now becoming possible to probe on different length scales, from the local order to the long range order. This information should open the way for the development of microscopic models of ferroelectric transitions and a better understanding of the relationship between electronic structure and lattice dynamics.
