Carbohydrate-binding activity present on the E. histolytica cell surfaces mediated the adherence of 2 types of bacteria, E. coli serotype O55 and Salmonella greenside O50. Adherence was inhibited by low-MW carbohydrates (10 mg/ml) such as galactose, lactose and N-acetylgalactosamine, and by asialofetuin and the lipopolysaccharide extracted from E. coli O55. Mild periodate oxidation of the bacteria inhibited their adherence; heat inactivation, glutaraldehyde fixation or .gamma.-irradiation had no effect. Pretreatment of trophozoites with glutaraldehyde, cytochalasin B or cold (5.degree. C) abolished adherence. None of these treatments affected the attachment of bacteria bearing type I pili with mannose-binding capacity. These findings lend further support to earlier observations on how amoebae interact with bacteria [i.e., bacterial enhancement of amoebal virulence].
