In order to realize a high-speed acoustic digital communication to control an ROV remotely, a basic experiment on a method using 32-quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) was carried out. Using a two-channel decision feedback equalizer (DFE) demodulator, good demodulation results were obtained in a tank test at a range of 2 m. In spite of a channel with a wide time spread, transmission rates of 62.5 k bit per second (bps) and 100 kbps were achieved. Even in the case of a transmission rate of 125 kbps, a symbol error rate on the order of 10-4 was achieved, which is sufficient performance to transmit an image.
