The behavior of plagioclase feldspars under metamorphic conditions is reviewed. The literature on plagioclase composition as related to reactions involving zoisite (epidote) and other calcic phases, the peristerite gap, and the coexistence ofintermediate plagioclases of various compositions is presented. The various ideas on the relative effects of structural states and of the role of chemical reactions on subsolidus relations are considered. Two views, not mutually exclusive, relative to plagioclase compositions, are apparent: a "homogeneous" view, emphasizing control by crystal-structural factors, and a "heterogeneous" view, dominated by sequential mineralogical reactions.
