78 are an enormous and abundant group, worldwide in distribution, arctic to tropical, and every continent has forms whose social biologies remain unknown. Although a few species nest in rotting wood, most make burrows in the soil. New and interesting types of social organization probably remain to be discovered in this subfamily, for only a tiny fraction of the species have been studied behaviorally. One recent finding concerns food transfer. In 1974 I emphasized that mouth to mouth food transfer was unknown in HALICTINAE, although well known in the other major group of primitively social bees, the XYLOCOPINAE (see chapter 5), as well as in the APIDAE and other social insects. It is therefore of special interest that Kukuk and Schwarz (1987, 1988) reported what appeared to be such trophallaxis in communal colonies of Lasioglossum (ChUalietus) erythrurum in Australia. This is an entirely new finding for halictid bees; if nectar or other materials are transferred, it considerably expands the diversity of social behaviors known among HALICTINAE. The present chapter and the next are largely limited to findings made since 1972. The HALICTINAE were treated by Sakagami (1974) and by Michener (1974), the material in the latter relevant to the present paper being largely in Chapters 8-11, with background natural history information in Chapters 22-26. In the following pages, although the 1974 book is specifically referred to on various occasions, unattributed statements are also based upon it. A more recent review, largely limited to biology of the genus Halietus, is by Knerer (l980a).
