Oxygen-free poly(dimethylsilylene) is synthesized by the coupling of dichlorodimethylsilane with sodium and subsequent methylation with methyllithium and iodomethane/lithium. When methylmagnesium iodide and iodomethane/magnesium are used, a trace amount of oxygen atoms is present in poly(dimethylsilylene). The absence of oxygen atoms is confirmed by29Si CP/MAS NMR and IR spectroscopy.
