Polyurethane films coated with thin gold electrodes bent by the application of an electric field. Because the degree of the bending deformation was proportional to the square of the applied electric field, this phenomenon was considered to be bending electrostriction. The mechanism of the bending electrostriction was also investigated by use of “blocking electrode” and “contacting electrode.” As the blocking electrode, and insulating thin film of polyethylene was inserted between the polyurethane and the gold electrode. As a result, the polyurethane film bent only when both electrodes were contacting electrodes. This shows that the bending electrostriction is not caused by dielectric polarization but is related to electric conduction through the polyurethane. The bending deformation is, thus, suggested to result from an asymmetric distribution of space charge formed by a space-charge-limited current.
