It is appropriate to reflect on the achievements in wound care in recent years and to speculate on its future direction in the year 2000 and beyond. A wide variety of wound treatments has always been used – some sensible, some dangerous – mostly designed to care for or ‘dress’ wounds. There has been little scientific interest in understanding how best to achieve healing. The belief that dressing wounds is the only consideration in wound care is a major barrier to achieving acceptance by professional colleagues that wound healing is a subject worthy of clinical and academic endeavour.
