Red cell volume was measured with chromium 51 labeled cells in 101 healthy women Whole blood and plasma volumes were derived indirectly from venous hematocrits. The data were collected and treated as described in a previous study on 201 healthy men. In the women, the degree of residual variation, after relation of the volumes to height, weight, height and weight combined, or to surface area, was about the same as that found in men. Trivariate regression equations relating volumes to height and weight combined were derived. A chart representing the equations graphically allows convenient prediction of red cell and plasma volumes for a woman of given height and weight. Sixty-seven women were of heights and weights such that they could be compared with the men previously studied. The red cell volume of the individual women was on the average 214 ml smaller and the plasma volume 85 ml larger than would be predicted for men of comparable height and weight.
