Our initial experiments with ectoderm-mesoderm interchange between early chick embryo limb buds (Zwilling,'55) left a number of unresolved problems. Despite the fact that the ectoderm was sometimes placed upon the mesoderm quite loosely (ie Saunders' ridge did not always make contact with mesoderm which was originally subjacent to a ridge) normal development could be obtained. Either other parts of the limb mesoderm could respond to the outgrowth stimulus of the apical ridge or there was a mutual adjustment of the two limb components. An attempt was made to settle this point by the elimination of the initial distal mesoderm. In the experiments which w7e shall describe this was accomplished in two ways. The distal mesoderm was actually cut away in one group of limb buds, and the remainder of the mesoderm was tested for response to an apical ridge. In another group the mesoderm from a single limb bud was provided with apical ridges from tw7o limb buds. Since successful experiments of the kind mentioned above could be assessed best in terms of limb duplication this aspect of limb development becomes the central theme of the present communication. In addition we obtained information about the regulative capacity of limb buds. Briefly our results leave no doubt that:(1) The capacity to respond to the outgrowth
