THE EFFECT OF MALE HORMONE ON AGGRESSIVE BEHAVIOR IN MICE

The aggressive behavior pattern of normal [male] C57 black mice is qualitatively similar to that of normal [male] Bagg albino mice. Normal C57 black mice display more attacking and exhibit a general trend to fight more frequently than do the albino mice. The albino mice rattle their tails a greater number of times in each round than do the black mice. When the ratio, attacks/(tail rattles + attacks) in both strains is compared, the difference between the 2 strains is highly significant; P < 0.0001 (t = 11 +). Fluctuations occur in the frequency with which the components of the aggressive behavior pattern are displayed by normal mice of both strains. Such changes may result from the initial aggressiveness of the group as a whole, conditioning the mice to show less aggression, and subsequent encounters with nonaggressive mice restoring the ability of mice to display aggressive behavior. Similar variations in aggressiveness occur in androgen-implanted castrates. As general aggressiveness increases, there is a decrease in grooming and vice versa. Castration of C57 black and Bagg albino [male] mice as immature animals or as adults results in the failure of these mice to display aggressive behavior, regardless of age at isolation when a period of 25 or more days elapses between castration and initial encounters. Testosterone propionate pellets subcut. implanted will induce castrate mice of both strains to display aggressive behavior characteristic in quality and quantity of normal [male] mice of comparable strain. Removal of androgen pellets from castrates results in an almost immediate cessation of aggressiveness in the majority of mice. After androgen therapy has begun, additional encounters may stimulate castrate mice to exhibit more aggressiveness within a single encounter, since any 2 mice which were members of sets of 4 mice displayed more tail-rattling, attacking and fighting in a given encounter than did mice which were members of sets of 3. The amt. of aggressive behavior displayed is positively correlated with the size of the seminal vesicles and prostate glands, since both are affected by amt. of androgen present.
