We have investigated the magnetism and magnetocaloric effects of RFe 0.5 Mn 0.5 O 3 (R= Gd, Tb, Dy and Ho). The Neél temperature of RFe 0.5 Mn 0.5 O 3 is near room temperature. The compounds except HoFe 0.5 Mn 0.5 O 3 present a spin reorientation (SR) behavior also around room temperature. The maximum values of magnetic entropy change of RFe 0.5 Mn 0.5 O 3 (R= Gd, Tb, Dy and Ho) compounds (Δ S M max) for 0–70 kOe are 23.3 J/kg K, 9.3 J/kg K, 9.5 J/kg K and 12.6 J/kg K, respectively. The relative refrigeration capacity (RCP) values are 385.5 J/kg, 370.3 J/kg, 324.4 J/kg and 389.8 J/kg, respectively. These results indicate that RFe 0.5 Mn 0.5 O 3 compounds are potential magnetic refrigerants.
