The finding of Ash Dieback (Chalara fraxinea) in the British Isles during 2012 led to an unprecedented level of political and media interest in a tree disease. The background of the disease and actions taken since its discovery is described from scientific, legal, political, administrative, media and industry perspectives. The outcome of the resulting independent expert taskforce is outlined and the lessons already learnt described. Weaknesses in the resulting situation for controlling the spread and impact of plant diseases are explored further in terms of lessons that need to be learnt.
