Of the seven species of mycoplasmas isolated from the urogenital tract of humans,Ureaplasma urealyticumandMycoplasma hominisare the ones found most commonly and are the only two known to cause disease (1–3).Mycoplasma genitaliumis a newly identified species first isolated from males with urethritis (4–6). Serological studies of females with pelvic inflammatory disease (7) and experimental inoculation of primates (8–10) suggest that this organism may also be pathogenic for humans, although its prevalence is unknown.
