Sally Humphries is an Associate Professor in International Development Studies. In 1993, she collaborated with a Honduran agronomist, Jose Jimenez, to create a farmer participatory research program in Honduras. The program trains poor hillside farmers to become researchers. Since its inception, the program has trained thousands of local farmers – men, women and youth - to improve their maize and beans, the principle subsistence crops in Honduras. The program is managed by a Honduran NGO, led by Jose Jimenez and Sally Humphries. Lauren Classen has recently obtained a PhD in Anthropology from the University of Toronto. She completed her Master’s degree under the supervision of Sally Humphries (Associate Professor in International Development Studies at the University of Guelph). During her Master’s, she worked in the community with poor hillside farmers and the Honduran NGO to assess the impact of the farmer participatory research program.
