The process of turbulent entrainment in jets and plumes is examined in a Lagrangian reference frame following the motion of the dominant eddies. This paper introduces the Lagrangian method and reviews the relevent laboratory experiments for Lagrangian scaling of the turbulent motion. Spreading characteristics of jets and plumes are correlated with the length and velocity scales of the dominant eddies. In the Lagrangian reference frame, turbulent flows with dominant eddies of similar geometric structure are observed to spread with nearly identical rate. Compared with the conventional Eulerian method, the Lagrangian method is more naturally connected to the process of entrainment.
