A number of derivatives of the strongly sweet-tasting beta- imino-beta-phenylpropionic acid nitrile were prepared. Only the 4-substituted compounds tasted sweet, the 2- and 3-substituted compounds proved tasteless. beta-Imino-[beta-4-methylphenyl]propionic acid nitrile was stronger in sweetness than the initial compound. This compound cannot be used in nutrition because of its toxicity.
