The long-term stability control of coal pillars is one of the most difficult problems facing miners in room mining. Coal pillars that are instable may have been left behind underground, resulting in roofs caving suddenly into the gob, surface subsidence, and other significant hazards. In the ecologically vulnerable areas of western China (Inner Mongolia, Shaanxi, and Ningxia), there are vast high-quality coal resources at shallow burial depths (0–300 m) and they constitute more than 85% of the total coal deposits in China. 1, 2 The western mining area has become the focus of coal mining in China because of the intense progress of the West China Development Strategy, and it has natural advantages of favorable geological conditions associated with mining. To respond to the effects of phreatic pore water in the loose beds of the Quaternary system and in the thick surface layer of aeolian sand, 90% of coal mines in the western area of China adopt the room mining method to enhance safety. 3, 4 Based on recent research studies, the left behind coal pillar under long-term loading is weakened by this method. The pillars can be easily damaged by destabilization, causing the above-mentioned hazards in local coal mines. 5, 6, 7, 8 Therefore, this issue must be addressed to protect the economic and social development of western China. In the past several decades, a number of studies have been conducted to determine the problems in ecologically fragile western areas of China. 9, 10, 11 Cemented paste backfill (CPB) technology, which offers both economic and environmental benefits, has been used extensively in the underground mines of China. In addition, CPB provides ground and wall support, and it also facilitates mine waste disposal. Thus, it limits the likelihood of caving and prevents subsidence. 12 In addition, CPB technology significantly improves the safety in underground mine operations and increases productivity; therefore, it is now considered a standard practice in mining operations worldwide. 13, 14 However, because of the difference between the backfill materials and filling costs, researchers have not found a rapid backfilling coal mining method that is suitable for wide use in local coal mines of China till date.
