The western Taiwan foredeep developed in the Pliocene–Quaternary during the formation of the Taiwan orogen. The sedimentary sequences within the foredeep are offset by a number of normal faults dated as Pliocene–Quaternary. The presence and significance of these young normal faults have been neglected, or they have mistakenly been interpreted as rifting features. Industrial multichannel seismic profiles and borehole information have been used in this study to examine these normal faults in the context of the model of flexural extension and to document their structural expressions and spatial and temporal variations. Unlike the early Tertiary normal faults of synrift origin, data from Pliocene–Quaternary normal faults in the Taiwan Strait indicate a close relationship to the adjacent fold-and-thrust belt. The results of these observations and interpretations of seismic reflection profiles support the idea that the crust underlying the western Taiwan foredeep has been flexurally downwarped and deformed by lithospheric bending.
