Choosing to change one’s diet is guided by a complex interaction of psychological factors. Stated in general terms, these pertain to readiness, willingness, and ability to change. A number of psychological models have been used to explain and predict changes in health behavior. Examples are the health belief model,’the use of health locus of control, 2 a self-efficacy model, 3 a model emphasizing stages of~ hange,~ and a behavioral intention modeL5 For dietary change specifically, a combination of select models appears to offer the most promise.
