To avoid the pitfalls of traditional comparisons of tropical and temperate forests, we suggest an hierarchical approach that takes into consideration the great diversity of tropical forests and constrains comparisons by climatic (life zone), edaphic and topographic (plant associations), and temporal (successional) factors. The hierarchical approach is illustrated with comparative information on soil carbon, forest biomass, litterfall, forest complexity, and species richness. The analysis uncovers several misconceptions that have been adopted after incomplete comparisons between temperate and tropical forests.
