The paper is a summary and discussion of a number of papers, published by the authors, on the embryology of the nervous system. The subdivision of the brain into an archencephalic and a deuteroencephalic part has relevance only to neural plate stages. When the neural plate has been formed, 3 successive waves of proliferation intensification pass in a rostro-caudal sequence, giving rise to proneuromeres, neuromeres and transverse bands of migration areas, i.e. nuclear anlages respectively. The bands are later crossed by 4 longitudinal bands. In this way a network of migration areas is formed. From each area one or more successive migrations take place, forming successive migration layers. The layers are finally divided into nuclei. These processes are astonishingly uniform in the vertebrate series. The 4 longitudinal columns of migration areas roughly correspond to the 4 columns of His and Herrick, defined physiologically. Fianlly an attempt was made to define the limits between the 5 classical brain parts on the basis of these results.
