SummaryThe horseradish peroxidase has been used as tracer to evidenciate the derivation of peculiar structures, labyrinths of tubules and lamellar formations of cisternae, present in denervated muscle fibers. The labyrinths appear early after denervation and increase in number with the progressing of atrophy. The peroxidase reaction product fills regularly the lumen of these structures as well as the central element of the triad. The labyrinths, therefore, must be regarded as a proliferation of the T-system.The lamellar formations or “helical complexes” are observed in muscle fibers after long periods of denervation (30 or more days). They appear as parallel arrays of cisternae and originate from the lateral element of the triad. They do not show any peroxidase product in their lumen. The present findings are discussed in relation to the idea that during the denervation atrophy both systems, S.R. and the T, proliferate forming characteristic structures.
