A measure of investigativeness was constructed that differentiates among people on their readiness to explore a variety of experiences. Similar to the challenge factor of the hardiness construct, the scale was used to explore the role of investigativeness as a moderator of stressful experiences in two studies. In one study with university students, investigativeness was found to moderate the relationship between negative life experiences and mood disturbance while sensation-seeking, a cognate variable, failed to do so. In the second study, investigativeness proved to be negatively related to the physiological disturbance, pain, and functional disability associated with rheumatoid arthritis. Both psychological disturbance and pain were associated with investigativeness after other variables were partialled out in a regression analysis. On the other hand, effects did not vary with severity of arthritis so that investigativeness cannot be said to have moderated the impact of arthritic symptomatology in this study.
