This study aimed to delineate the effect of invasion of Phyllostachys pubescens stands into neighboring forests in Ohgisu-Toshimo, Nasukarasuyama, Tochigi Prefecture. We made a distribution map of bamboo stands and assessed the changes for 29 years of the stand area using aerial photographs taken in 1975 and 2004. We also surveyed the stand structures at the front of invasion of the P. pubescens stands into adjacent forests. The map indicated that P. pubescens stands occupied approximately 35 % of the bamboo stands in the area. The analysis of aerial photographs showed none of significant range expansion of total area of P. pubescens stands. However, in some individual stands invasion of P. pubescens into neighboring forests were observed. Analyses of stand structure and spatial distribution at the front of the invasion indicated that the broad-leaved trees with less than 10 cm of diameter largely tended to be dead. The dead of trees might be mainly caused by the deterioration of light condition by the invasion of P. pubescens culms. The decrease of tree species diversity was also occurred by the invasion and the change of species composition was observed in some invaded stands. In conclusion, the invasion of the P. pubescens led to the dieback of trees lower than invaded culms and reduced tree species diversity in the stands.
