"Internalization" is a process by which social messages and meanings are felt, thought, and experienced in ways that affect how people make themselves and their worlds.' The dimension of "affect" has often been viewed as a solution to the difficult problem of understanding mechanisms of internalization in religious systems. This would seem to be the case, for example, in Clifford Geertz's definition of the "cultural system" of "religion"; Geertz's multipart statement that would relate concepts such as "ethos" and "worldview" hinges on affective "moods and motivations."
