In 7 young men non-viable red cells injected into the circulation rapidly disappeared. Of from 7800 to 22, 300 mg. Hb injected, 6 to 18 per cent. was present as plasma Hb within 15 to 30 min. after injection. The injected red cells were labelled with radio-active Fe and this showed that the half-time of circulation of Fe loads of from 0.15 to 0.95 mg. per kg. bodyweight varied from 33 to 150 min. and was significantly and positively correlated with the amount given. Transferrin-bound radio-active Fe was found in plasma within 30 min. and reached 18 to 22 per cent. of the amount injected in 2 hr. About half the Fe was retained by reticuloendothelial cells after 2 weeks, but in 4 subjects bled in order to mobilize Fe reserves almost none remained at that time. The remaining stored Fe was slowly released but much remained in the tissues after 6 weeks. D. Duncan.
