In recent years there has been increasing interest in understanding the properties manifested by polymer blends prepared under a variety of experimental condition^.'-^ Some semicrystalline polymer blends manifest synergism in mechanical proper tie^.^-^ The increase in a particular property of a blend needs to be understood on the basis of a model based on the observed morphology of the pure major component. There exist several possible explanations for this type of'behavior at low concentrations of the minor component (10-20%). In spite of several efforts, no systematic criterion has been established for selecting a particular blend which can give synergism in mechanical properties. Polypropylene-polyethylene blends are known for their interesting properties and crystallization studies have been carried out to determine their typical behavior. 6, In this note, it is intended to establish a criterion for selecting useful blend systems and to suggest a possible molecular mechanism that can give synergism in mechanical properties. It is shown that epitaxial growth in polymer blends is possible and can play a vital role in governing the properties of polymeric blends and laminates.
