Pulse transmission and continuous wave ultrasonic techniques have been shown to be capable of accurately determining orthotropic elastic properties of both cortical and cancellous bone (Ashman et cl.. 1984. 1987; Ashman and Rho. 1988). Ultrasonic techniques oKer specific advantages over the traditioinal mechanical evaluations of elasticity. including:(I) the ability to make mcasurcments in several directions on a single specimen;(2) use of specimens ol smaller size than those required for mechanical testing techniques; and (3) the non-destructive nature of ultrasonic testing.Of p; lrticular interest was the dcvelopmcnt of a nondcatructivc technique to quantify bone ingrowth into porous media. Considering the prior successes ol using ultrasound for measurement of bone properties, the objective of this work was to apply the technique to a group of porous coralline hydroxygpatite (CH) specimens (Martin YI ul., 1989; Sdrtoris YI ul.. l9W6) retrieved after implantation in dogs. The ultrasonic results were compared to traditional histomorphometric measures of ingrowth.
