By columnar chromatography and TLC, some carotenoids were found in certain species of lizards. In the Lacerta agilis specimens: .beta.-carotene, .beta.-carotene epoxide, .beta.-cryptoxanthin, lutein, lutein epoxide, zeaxanthin and astaxanthin. In the Lacerta vivipara specimens: .beta.-carotene, .beta.-carotene epoxide, .beta.-cryptoxanthin, canthaxanthin, lutein epoxide, zeaxanthin, astaxanthin, astaxanthin ester and diatoxanthin. In the Anguis fragilis specimens: .beta.-carotene, .beta.-carotene epoxide, .beta.-cryptoxanthin, canthaxanthin, lutein, phoenicoxanthin, astaxanthin, astaxanthin ester and mutatoxanthin. The total carotenoid content ranged from 0.992 (muscles of L. agilis) to 47.511 .mu.g/g fresh weight (liver of L. vivipara).
