Extensive use is now being made of isentropic charts for the rep resentation of flow patterns in atmospheric currents, and their use is being attempted in oceanography also. Their advantage lies in the property that any particle displaced adiabatically and maintained under hydrostatic equilibrium remains on its original surface. The purpose in using isentropic charts is, briefly, that they afford a means of determin ing the motion in a manner entirely independent of assumptions regard ing the existence of gradient flow. At the same time it is desirable to know what the gradient flow would be, and a convenient method for de termining it is needed. The common methods of represent ing gradient flow, viz., by means of isobars or topography of isobaric sur faces, cannot be used for the slop ing surface of an isentropic chart, ititution, Woods Hole, Mass.
