In 1936 the writer presented before the American Association of Anatomists an account of the dermatoglyphics of palms and finger tips in mongoloid imbeciles ( ’36 a, abstract). The present note reports the findings in detail. The literature relating to mongolism is extensive, and f o r the present purpose it need not be reviewed. Beference may be wade to Crookshank (’31) for a general discussion of the subject a id for bibliography. It is sufficient to point out here that reported observations of the niongoloicl hand are restricted almost entirely to conformatioil and flexion furrows, though dermatoglyphics are described in several instances by Xutrux-Bornoz ( ’ 3 7 ) aiid Bettmann (’32) discusses the increased occui*rence of palmar hypothenar and theiiar patterns in individuals preschiiting the ‘simian line’ (Vierfingerfurche) , thus incidentally involving mongoloids since this furrow frequently appears in them. As to hand form, it should be recalled that in most mongoloids the hand is ‘lax, plump, stubby, square-palmed’ (Crookshank), the digits heing short, thick and somewhat tapcring, the minimus often incurved. The form of the classic mongoloid hand, with its distinctive departures from the normal, should be kept in mind as the background of the dermatoglyphic peculiarities which are to be recounted.
