AIDS is a disease that can not occur without preceding infection by the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). But it also is a disease predominantly of people whose life styles differ from the majority since most persons afflicted with the disease in the US are homosexual men or IV drug abusers. Social disease used to be a euphemism for venereal disease. Today AIDS is the euphemism that many use to express their negative social feelings toward homosexual men and drug addicts. AIDS is not 1 epidemic but several. It is an epidemic of disease; an epidemic of fear; an epidemic of homophobia; and a media epidemic. This article discusses the social response to the AIDS epidemic stressing the fear involved the call for quarantine and exclusions the aspects of communication which influence social response social issues around testing for the HIV antibody and the governmental response. Homosexuality is now being discussed openly throughout the media and hopefully soon in the schools. The challenge for all public and private persons will be to make sure that these discussions are not misused to the detriment of those currently subjected to alientation and discrimination.
