MATERIALS AND METHODSThe inoculum used was the Walker strain of herpes simplex virus from the sixth passage in tissue culture (Maben cell, lung carcinoma) stored as a cell suspension at-70 C. The LD5 0 in mice was 1.0 X IO" 516. A 100 μΐ virus suspension was dropped on each of the corneas of 36 albino rabbits weighing between 2.0 and 3.5 kg. The cor neas were not subjected to any artificial trauma. The course of the disease was fol lowed with frequent slitlamp observations and measurements of corneal thickness. Each measurement of central corneal thick-
