Data are presented on the infections that developed in 200 chicks less than 1 week of age, into which isolated salivary glands of Aedes aegypti mosquitoes infected with P. gallinaceum were injd. subcut. Of these, 97.5% become infected, with a mean prepatent period of 8.523 [plus or minus] 0.108 days. Of the infected birds, 97.9% died, the mean duration of survival after the day of inoculation being 12.05 [plus or minus] 0.163 days, or 3.644 [plus or minus] 0.114 days after infection became patent. Exoerythrocytic forms were found in the brains of all birds that died of the infection. Peak parasite densities averaged 3,776 parasitized cells per 10,000 red blood cells. The mechanical introduction of isolated infected salivary glands is tedious and time-consuming but highly effective in producing infections with this parasite and host.
