Methods of cultivating tissues of intact and atherosclerotic ascending aortae of adult rabbits in homologous nutrient media are described. The dynamics of fat accumulation in the cultures of intact aortae cultivated with the normal serum can be described as a rhythmic change of lipid content in the cells. The rhythmic dynamics were not observed in cultures with hyperlipemic serum, where the degree of lipoidosis and cell degeneration was greater, and the final stages of lipoidosis (fat degeneration and death of the cells) occurred earlier than in cultures with normal serum. At the same time the hyper- lipemic serum was a stronger stimulant of cell migration and cell proliferation in cultures than was normal serum at the initial stages of cultivation. A 0.5 mg/100 ml increase in ascorbic acid concentration in the nutrient medium decreased lipoidosis in cultures with the hyper-lipemic serum and increased it in cultures with the normal serum. The lipoidosis of cells in cultures of atherosclerotic aortae grown with the normal serum was less pronounced than in cultures of intact aortae of the same age.
