Major and minor dsRNAs of citrus tristeza virus (CTV) were detected and compared with confidence when the dsRNA purified from 2,0 g of infected bark tissue was analysed by polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. Virus specific dsRNAs were detected in sweet orange, sour orange, Mexican lime, lemon, grapefruit, citron, and Citrus excelsa. The most reliable dsRNA results were obtained from sweet orange, C. excelsa and citron. Rankings for dsRNA quantity were generally matched by the antigen titre of CTV in the hosts tested. The dsRNA profiles were generally characteristic for each of four strains, but grapefruit and lemon had a tendency to affect the quality, as well as the quantity of dsRNA. DsRNA was detected with diffIculty in the months of the year when daytime temperatures were highest. There was a strong correlation between inability to detect a 0,5 x l<r MW dsRNA and the biological designation of an isolate as neIther a seedling yellows type, nor a stem pitting isolate of grapefruit.
