Given a projective variety X over an algebraically closed field k, we investigate the properties of parabolic bundles along a fixed simple normal crossings divisor D. We show in particular that, if k is of characteristic zero, finite parabolic bundles are in one to one correspondence with representations of the etale fundamental group of X - D. This fact is used to define a fundamental group scheme, following Nori's ideas, in this setup.
