The developments leading from the Hildebrand solubility parameter (1950) to the Hansen solubility parameters (HSP) (1967) are discussed in the context of usage in coatings. Future applications will focus on predicting and controlling surface phenomena such as optimizing pigment surfaces, characterization and selection of surface active agents, self-assembly, and surface mobility. A large number of commonly used coatings raw materials are not yet characterized by HSP. This situation should be corrected as soon as possible. © 2004 Published by Elsevier B.V.
