Conducted a family genetic study of 269 probands (hebephrenics, catatonics, paranoid schizophrenics, schizoaffective psychotics, unipolar affective psychotics, and bipolar affective psychotics) with functional psychosis and 1,577 1st-degree relatives. The diagnostic distinction between schizophrenia and affective psychosis was confirmed by the finding that approximately 10% of 1st-degree relatives of probands with schizophrenia or affective psychosis suffered from the same disorder as the proband. When schizophrenic probands were further divided by subtype diagnosis, the highest rate of global schizophrenia was found in relatives of catatonics, hebephrenics, and paranoid schizophrenics. With regard to subtype diagnoses, there was also a tendency toward homotypical secondary cases among relatives of probands with these 3 subtype diagnoses. The relatives of schizoaffective probands showed the highest overall frequency of functional psychosis, with schizophrenic and affective-psychotic secondary cases being equally frequent. Probands with affective psychosis of all types had the highest rate of unipolar secondary cases among their relatives.(6 ref)(PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2016 APA, all rights reserved)
