iore mediation—the use of microorganisms to control and destroy contaminants—is one of the fastest growing sectors of the US mar-/ket for hazardous-waste cleanup and is expected to become a S500 miliion-per-year industry by the year 2000 (1). Despite the expanding market for this technology and its many legiti-mate applications, bioremediation vendors have acquired a reputation as modern-day snake oil salesmen among some regulators and potential users of the technology. Bioremediation is neither universally under-stood nor trusted, and its success is hotly debated. Bioremediation is thus a technology in need of perfor-mance standards. This month, the National Research Council of the National Academy of Sciences will release a report,“In Situ Bioremediation: When Does It Work?”, which provides a three-part method for evaluating the perfor-mance of bioremediation systems for cleaning up contaminated ground-water andsoil (2). The report, which we summarize here, focuses specifi-cally on bioremediation of ground-water and soils in place (ie, in situ), as opposed to bioremediation of soil
