THE sensitivity and recovery of germ cells after X-radiation were measured by their ability to produce normal embryos. The spermatozoa are 3-4 times as sensitive as the ova and require more than twice as long to recover from the same dose of radiation. The early stages of gametogenesis were most sensitive. X-rays inhibited the development of spermatogonia into spermatocytes. With a dose of 1980rthis inhibition lasted for about 23 days, during which period the testes were reduced in size. With the same dose, a reduction in ovarian size occurred during the first 7-8 days, after which normality was restored and normal size regained by the 22nd day; this was apparently correlated with a transitory block in oocyte formation.
