In the course of 10 mos., one strain of Plasmodium vivax experienced 6 successive complete anopheline-human pas sages. The technique requires a dependable supply of uninfected [female] anophelines, preferably laboratory bred; a strain of Plasmodium vivax from a suitable patient, which will produce an infection of moderate intensity; careful conservation of the infected mosquitoes; a comprehensive record of the mosquitoes in each lot and the dissection of those which die a natural death to determine the approximate qualitative incidence of infection in a lot; and the application of 2 infected mosquitoes to the patient in order to insure a clinical attack of malaria extending over several weeks. The therapy is more successful on patients in good physical condition and newly hospitalized. Adult negroes are decidedly re-fractory to inoculation. The clinical course of malaria and the possibility of spontaneous termination are related to the number of infected mosquitoes applied.
