Various antinuclear antibody (ANA) patterns have been described in progressive systemic sclerosis (PSS)(I). These include homogeneous, nucleolar, speckled, and discrete speckled patterns (2). Immunofluorescence microscopy with various tissue culture substrates has permitted more defined localization of antibody targets. This study characterizes a serum autoantibody from a patient with PSS. By immunoelectron microscopy, the specificity of the antibody was localized to the centriolar structures of the cell. Tlhis distinguished it from possible activity against mitotic spindle components or other surrounding fibrillar structures.
