FeO slags with additions of CaO, SiO2, and MgO were equilibrated with atmospheres of SO2containing additions of CO and O2. At low partial pressures of oxygen, sulfur is present as sulfide, and at higher pressures, as sulfate. At constant oxygen and sulfur pressures, sulfur absorption as sulfide is nearly independent of the ratio CaO/FeO, but is decreased by addition of SiO2or MgO. The presence of CaO is necessary for absorption of sulfur as sulfate.
